One Bored Gamer Girl – Star Wars 2008

// August 20th, 2008 // 2 Comments » // For Geeks, Gaming, Geeks, I recommend, Ibdreamy, Ipod, PS3, Pictures, Videos, Xbox

I’m so bored with the video game selection that’s out right now. I’ve either played it or I don’t want to play it. My all time favorite games are , Silent Hill , , , (wallpaper), Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion…etc.

Basically think of any good fantasy-based, role-playing adventure game and I’ve played it. Has anyone played Dark Sector yet? I’m just curious if it’s any good..I haven’t heard much about it yet but it’s one of the last games at Blockbuster for PS3 that I haven’t rented yet..they have a crappy selection but their actually getting a tad better lately. Lame thing is they got rid of all their older games so if I wanted to rent Silent Hill 2 or SSX Tricky..I couldn’t..Blockbuster won’t carry older games anymore.
Anyway, there are a few games that are coming out soon that I’m excited about..

This post is mainly for my Wordpress site but I know some of my LJ friends have WordPress blogs and some who also use programs that allow them to add pinging services to Live Journal..like Windows Live Writer which I just started using myself.

What is blog pinging service?
The Blog Pinging services inform blog directories and search engines online whenever your blog has been updated and this helps more people discover your blog and increases your traffic.
Below I’ve listed some pinging services that you can add to your Blog.

How to add a list of ping services to your blog?

go to your wordpress dashboard >> click on the Settings Tab >> Go to writing sub tab >> scroll down the page and you will find “Update Services” section at the bottom of the page >> paste urls into the box >> click save

If you use Windows Live Writer:  Go to Tools >>Options >>Ping Services>>click OK

What is a Diva Geek?

// May 4th, 2008 // No Comments » // For Geeks, Geeks

Lazy Saturday Poll: Am I a Geek or Not?

Asking myself that same question is basically how I came up with the domain name for this blog “DivaGeek“.

What is a diva geek anyway you might ask yourself..well let me explain..When your a girl it can be a little hard to be 100% geek 100% of the time because being a girl drives us to do girly things that true geeks wouldn’t get caught dead doing like going purse shopping, wearing pink lip gloss and if your a true Diva going to brunch and doing pilates.

I personally don’t do pilates or go to brunch but that’s just because I’m lazy and I eat breakfast… I do however LOVE pink lipgloss.

What I’m getting at is when your a girl in technology sometimes you just can’t fit into the mold of geek..we can’t help it if we’re a little diva and a little geek. I like to say I’m 25% diva and 75% geek or visa versa depending on my mood.

Errors Installing Windows Service Pack 1? Problems with Vista’s Event Log Viewer? A FIX!

// April 13th, 2008 // No Comments » // Admin Tools, Errors, For Geeks, Freeware, Microsoft, Useful, Windows

Tech Support Cat

I run Vista on my computer at home and about 3 months after I bought it some of the Windows services stopped working out of the blue namely the Windows Event Log Viewer. Not having it hasn’t really caused me problems yet and I assumed the only way to fix it was to reinstall Vista..

So..I just ignored it.

Until a couple days ago when I was prompted to install the new Windows Service Pack 1 the installation failed and it returned Error Code 800706B5 on SP1.

So, I was forced to figure out how to fix the issue and I found a work around that worked like a charm. I finally got the Event Log Viewer running and I successfully installed the service pack.

I think what happens when you try to install the update is it trys to write to the system event file, finds that it’s non-operational, and then quits. That’s just a guess, though.

According to the forums it was discovered that the the issue has to do with permissions that have been configured incorrectly at some point. The evil lies within this folder… C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup and so you if you either delete it or rename the folder and reboot it will automatically re-create the folder and your issue will be fixed.  First I tried to rename the RtBackup folder but all I got was permission denied errors so I downloaded a client called Unlocker which worked. Some claime you can rename the folder in Safe Mode with UAC off. I already had UAC disabled; I just used the Unlocker application and I didn’t even try it in Safe Mode.

I’m such the tech rebel.. I know..

Blogging..my rock star life..

// April 13th, 2008 // No Comments » // Alice in Chains, Celebrity, Demri Parrot, Ibdreamy, Layne Staley, Music, Personal Pictures, Personal Posts, Pictures, Rest in Peace, Update, friends

I hardly blog anymore …for a long time I blogged about everything I did, saw, heard and felt..but lately I feel like I don’t have anything remotely interesting to say. Wow that sucks.

My life is pretty boring now. I go to work, I come home and I take care of my family. We do things together of course but nothing that people would want to read about. I’m sure my trip to the park or whatever is not something the general public could give two cents about. I know this because I don’t want to read other peoples posts about their boring ass crap either.

Lately I just post stuff that I’ve found online that I think is cool, funny or that I think might be useful to people.

I don’t have a rock star lifestyle but I’m no Auntie M either..I’ve had my fair share of the rock star lifestyle. In the early 90’s I was living in Seattle and I dated one of the guys in Alice in Chains, Mike Starr.

I spent most of my 20’s hanging around people in the music industry and/or people trying to get into the music industry. I’m the farthest thing from a groupie so don’t even go there. I just happen to live in Seattle at the time it was popping off like crazy and I happen to meet some of the people who were in the middle of it all. I was close friends with Layne Staley and his girlfriend Demri for years.

Demri passed away at 27 when her abusive lifestyle.. god she was so beautiful and talented…and I cried again 6 years later when Layne passed away from his broken heart and spirit.

My life is completely different now that I’ve had my kids and all that I have left from my rock star lifestyle is a Platinum album that’s framed and hanging on my wall. It was presented to me by Alice in Chains and has my name on it which is pretty bad ass. It’s one of my prized possessions and a nice reminder of the good times.

My son is turning 11 this month so it’s been years since I was hanging out backstage except for maybe backstage at my kids Winter Recital. My life has gone in such radically different directions since then.

I have 3 beautiful kids and an awesome man and we’re both concentrated on our careers and trying to make it or at least not be broke. We want more from life then we have now and we know the only way to get there is to work hard.

I recently started a new job doing tech support for an email hosting company and I really like it so far it’s a great young company that seems to have their game going on. I just moved over there after working a year at a well known web-hosting company doing tech support for them. It was great learning experience, I learned more in a year then I ever thought possible.

So..for now I’m just working hard trying to buy that dream house. I don’t regret giving up my rockstar lifestyle for the Mommy track. Memories are still good.

Microsoft Threatens Hostile Takeover if Yahoo Does Not Agree to Buyout in Three Weeks

Microsoft CEO gives Yahoo board deadline for deal
April 5, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp. has set a three-week deadline for Yahoo Inc to accept its current $31 a share cash and stock offer or Microsoft will take its case to Yahoo shareholders, Microsoft said on Saturday.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said in a letter dated April 5 and addressed to Yahoo’s board of directors that “now is the time” to negotiate final terms of a deal, one which would mark the biggest takeover yet in the high-tech industry.

“If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors,” Ballmer writes.

If the Yahoo board does not agree to the bid Microsoft has threatened to launch a hostile bid, creating an “undesirable impact on the value of your company”. Microsoft may also attempt to get its own candidates onto the Yahoo board at the AGM.

“If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors…” said the letter.

News Corp. May Join Yahoo Bid With Microsoft

News Corp. is in talks with Microsoft over a joint bid for Yahoo. Meanwhile, Yahoo and AOL are in advanced talks about combining their Web operations, a deal that could thwart Microsoft’s effort. Hacker Super Bowl – PWN 2 OWN – Mac goes down in two minutes

// April 10th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Abuse, Apple, For Geeks, Geeks, Microsoft, News, Videos, WTF, Windows

Most Mac users today live in a fantasy land. Mac’s can’t get Hacked? DOH! Read on my Mac friends…you’ve been pwned!

It’s the most anticipated matchup in the hacker world: Linux versus Mac OS X versus Vista. Who will get hacked first?
That’s what organizers of the CanSecWest security conference hope to discover this week as they give show attendees a shot at hacking into the three laptops they’ve put on display here in Vancouver.
The catch? They have to use a brand-new “zero day” attack that nobody has seen before. The prize is $20,000, plus you get to keep the laptop.
Show organizers are calling the contest PWN 2 OWN. It may be the quickest $10,000 Charlie Miller ever earned.

He took the first of three laptop computers — and a $10,000 cash prize — Thursday after breaking into a MacBook Air at the CanSecWest security conference’s PWN 2 OWN hacking contest.

Show organizers offered a Sony Vaio, Fujitsu U810 and the MacBook as prizes, saying that they could be won by anybody at the show who could find a way to hack into each of them and read the contents of a file on the system, using a previously undisclosed “0day” attack.

Nobody was able to hack into the systems on the first day of the contest when contestants were only allowed to attack the computers over the network, but on Thursday the rules were relaxed so that attackers could direct contest organizers using the computers to do things like visit Web sites or open e-mail messages.

The MacBook was the only system to be hacked by Thursday, however, the word on the show floor is that the Linux and Vista systems will meet with some serious challenges on Friday.

Miller, a former National Security Agency employee best known as one of the researchers who first hacked Apple’s iPhone last year, didn’t take much time. Within 2 minutes, he directed the contest’s organizers to visit a Web site that contained his exploit code, which then allowed him to seize control of the computer, as about 20 onlookers cheered him on.

Vista Falls on the Last Day

The Vista laptop fell on the last day of the conference.

Since it was the third day of the contest, which saw a MacBook Air get hacked on Thursday, the TippingPoint Zero Day Initiative relaxed the rules even further. On the first day of the contest, only the operating system could be targeted, but on the second day that was expanded to include standard applications. An undisclosed Safari flaw led to the MacBook Air’s downfall.
But on Friday, hackers could target any “popular” piece of application software that you might find on a system. The Fujitsu laptop, running Vista Ultimate, was compromised by a previously undiscovered flaw in Adobe’s Flash software.

Catch-All Email Addresses and Email Spoofing

// March 7th, 2008 // No Comments » // Abuse, DNS, Domain Names, Email, For Geeks, Hosting, Useful, Web Hosting, web tools

Email spoofing may occur in different forms, but all have a similar result: a user receives email that appears to have originated from one source when it actually was sent from another source. Email spoofing is often an attempt to trick the user into making a damaging statement or releasing sensitive information (such as passwords).

Examples of spoofed email that could affect the security of your site include:

  • email claiming to be from a system administrator requesting users to change their passwords to a specified string and threatening to suspend their account if they do not do this
  • email claiming to be from a person in authority requesting users to send them a copy of a password file or other sensitive information

Using a Catch-All Email Address and Spoofing
One thing I recommend is that you do not use a catch-all email address for your domain name. Creating a catch-all email address, means anything@yourdomain.com will be forwarded to you; it doesn’t have to be an actual email address it just has to be sent to @yourdomain.com and any email that cannot find a valid recipient and would therefore bounce under normal circumstance gets successfully delivered without returning an error message to the original sender which sounds great but it also gives spammers a wide open door to attack you and use your domain name to send spam.
If you want to use a catch all email address then you should add a SPF record to your DNS that identifies the mail servers that are allowed to send email representing your domain name. Any receiving server that supports SPF/SenderID will check for the SPF record and reject the e-mail that didn’t come from a permitted mail server.
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record will certainly help the spoofing situation (you can read more about how this works here but keep in mind this is not completely foolproof yet because it also requires the receiving organization supports SPF or SenderID and unfortunately SPF is still not supported by everyone.

If you don’t directly manage your DNS record (most don’t) or you don’t know what any of this means, the quickest way to a solution is to call the tech support department of your Internet Service Provider or email hosting provider. Tell them about the problem you’re having, that you think it might have something to do with SPF, and let them help you.

Forms of Cybersquatting

Cybersquatting – registering a domain name using a trademarked name or company name that is not yours with the goal to make money off the company name, personal name or trademark. Sad thing is not all companies or people have a trademark so a cybersquatter can easily register a domain name using their name and then force them to buy it from them in order to use it. There are laws to protect people from cybersquatter but it is a very expensive to fight. (see more info on Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy )

Typosquatting - registering a domain name that is a close to the spelling of or a common misspelling of a trademarked brand name or a well known name. For example: Gooogle.com

Domain tasting is when someone registers domain name(s) and then keeps only the ones that have economic value. If they find that the domain name does not make them money then they have the domain name refunded using the five day “grace period”. Domain tasting should not be confused with domain kiting.

Domain kiting is the process of deleting a domain name during the five-day grace period and then immediately re-registering it for another five-day period. This process is repeated any number of times with the end result of having the domain registered without ever actually paying for it.

Phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as user names, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy website. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets. You’ll usually find phishing links sent out in an email or an instant message that will direct users to enter details at a website that “looks” like eBay for example. Always type the domain name you want to visit directly into your address bar. Never click on a link to a site where you plan on entering your personal information unless your 100% sure it’s legit and you can never be 100% sure so just type it in. It’s easy to hide where the link your clicking on is actually going and it’s also very easy to design websites that look and act exactly like your banks site or ebays site. Be safe!

My boyfriend bought me Lost Odyssey tonight for Valentines day. I’ve had a deposit on it for a month. I’m so excited to play it because I’ve been waiting for a new RPG and if it is anything like Final Fantasy (my favorite games) then I’ll be one happy gamer girl. I bought the PS3 recently in hopes that they would come out with more RPG’s which is kind of ironic now that Lost Odyssey came out only on Xbox 360. I’m so sick of playing all the first person shooter games that flood the Xbox 360 game list.

Ok, I’m gonna go open it up and pop it in. I hope it’s as good as I think it’s gonna be.

Tattooed Geeks

Submit to gametaggr!

I have a large collection of geek and gamer tattoo pictures that I’ve found online. Mostly at bmeink.com and bmezine.com. I have them all saved in my Fotki Gallery.

I personally only have two small tattoos but my boyfriend has 9 of them and his are not small. Mostly on his legs. His best friend is a professional tattoo artist so he gets his work done for free which doesn’t help because when Roy gets a random idea for a tattoo.. there’s not that normal amount of time to actually think it through and lately it seems like it’s been a weekly thing.. soon I might just have to do an intervention and check him into tattoo addiction treatment.
He also has his ears stretch which I tell him is cool now but when he’s 90 that’s not going too look so hot anymore. *)

I plan on getting another tattoo though and I’ve been thinking about getting either some kind of anime or pinup girl. Not sure yet. I also love stars. I want something simple. Black and white. I really like writing for some reason..I even like the bar code tat but it’s become a little too trendy for me. I’ve been looking around online for ideas and that’s kinda how I ended up with a whole gallery of gamer tats. I can’t believe how popular Mario bro’s is for the geek…yeah I get it… the game is a classic but I think it’s kinda getting played out..check out the gallery..
