Meta Tags in Plain English

// March 5th, 2010 // No Comments » // Code, For Geeks, SEO, Useful, Wordpress, web tools, webdesign, webmaster

Meta-tags are used by search engines to correctly index and rank web sites. The most important meta tags are the keywords meta tags and the description meta tags and both are essential for any well-built site.

When you create a website and you submit it to the search engines, the search engines “spiders” are sent out to “crawl” the site and attempt to correctly index it based on the information it provides. They do this based on several things including the keywords in the content and in the meta tags. Each search engine indexes web sites according to their own algorithms. Some place emphasis on the description tag, such as AltaVista. Other search engines, like Exactseek, are meta tag purists, as stated in their user policy: “Your site will not be added if it does not have Title and Meta description tags.

Recently, some search engines have downplayed the importance of meta tags due to spam. Some SEO “specialists” were keyword stuffing their tags with irrelevant information, just to get traffic. To penalize this abuse, some search engines don’t assign too much weight to the keywords in meta tags, but they still check to make sure they are relevant.

Fact: All major search engines including Google, Yahoo!, Scrub The Web, MSN Bing and others utilize Meta Tags!

If you’re visiting or worse paying search engine optimization sites that claim Meta Tags including the Meta Description are not used by the major search engines and the meta tag isn’t important anymore.. Run away, don’t walk but you don’t have to take my word for it, just visit Google™ or Yahoo!® and see what they have to say about Meta Tag optimization.

Bottom line.. either way, if you don’t have meta tags, or your meta tags are stuffed with irrelevant keywords, you won’t rank well in the search engines.

Avoid using capitalization in your code, as well as any repetition within the keyword tag.  The meta tag description is displayed by most search engines along with the page title. It is important to keep the meta description short, concise and relevant to your site content. I suggest under 30-40 words. (up to a maximum of 250 characters).

Recommendations for the Meta Keywords tag: Make sure to only use keywords that are relevant to your site. Search engines are known to penalize or blacklist your site for abuse.

MOST IMPORTANT: Put the same keywords that you put your meta tag in your website content! If the keywords aren’t already included within the body text in sufficient density, and in a coherent and relevant context then it won’t matter what keyword tags you use or where you put them. You won’t rank well and you may be penalized for keyword stuffing.

Without a doubt, content is still king and still the biggest contributor to search engine page ranking, so if you want to raise your rankings, make sure you have quality content.

I recommed using a Meta Tag generator like Scrub the Web or Addme.com to create the Meta Tag. If you need help learning how to insert the Meta tag into your Wordpress  hosted website click here.

For more information read How To Dial In Your Keywords and Making Friends With The Spider.

In the default installation, WordPress does not include meta tags such as description and keywords. So you must insert this yourself.

Using Meta Tag Plugins allow you to customize meta tags, and to choose the ones you want to add, or not, on a per-post basis. This allows your meta information to better describe each page.

OK..Now that I’m done researching this post.. I need to go re-do my meta tags. Well at least I have a meta tag!! The scary thing is I give financial advisors SEO and meta tag advice all day while I completly neglect my own meta tags. Bad, bad Webmaster!

Don’t Miss Out on Local SEO Opportunities

Don’t Miss Out on Local SEO Opportunities

Local search engine optimization is a great way to charge up your search rankings. It’s a faster method for making sure you’re on the right track, and if optimized properly you can really take advantage of some targeted traffic that will only help your business in the future.

It doesn’t matter if you’re developing websites for a mom and pop local plumber or a multi-million dollar agency that will have thousands of dynamic pages, the same 13 steps to on-site SEO will need to be applied to each.

How to Write Blog Posts to Increase Search Engine Traffic – Here’s an easy formula to follow:

  • In your blog, write a post with keyword A in your title something catchy, more info on that over here at seomoz or copyblogger
  • Write in-depth and informative content related to keyword A
  • Target keyword A in a link from your post to page2.html
  • When appropriate, link out to other authorities that can offer more information about your keyword topic (Use this tip with caution. While you are trying to give the user more info and get the attention of the other site – thus possibly getting a link back to your site – you should try to strike a balance so that the effectiveness of your post is maximized without excessive links out from your site)
  • Remember to vary the way you link keyword A to page2.html (did you target long-tail keywords? Those are very easy to alter)
  • Repeat this process on each post for all pertinent keywords throughout your site

The nice thing about this formula is that you actually tackle quite a few of the common marketing questions that challenge many business owners.

Wordpress’s Pings can Hurt your Blog & the Plugin that Saves the Day

// November 16th, 2008 // No Comments » // Blogging, Headline, I recommend, SEO, Tutorial, Useful, Wordpress, Wordpress Plugins, web tools, webmaster

If Pinging to you is just one of those geek terms that you’ve come across but just brushed it off as more techno-speak. Then it’s important that you read this post..

Pinging is why blogs are more powerful than ordinary websites and why blogs are easily indexed in search engines while websites struggle to get indexed, Pinging is also why blogs attract more traffic than ordinary websites..this is all because Blogs have the ability to PING! and you can’t afford to overlook the ping process, no matter how geeky it sounds.

Ok, so What is Pinging and what does it do for my blog?

In geek speak:“In blogging, ping is an XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent to one or more “ping servers,” which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material. Many blog authoring tools automatically ping one or more servers each time the blogger creates a new post or updates an old one.” – according to the Wikipedia article: ‘Ping (blogging)‘.

Pinging – not to be confused with Pingback or trackback

Similarly, aggregators also use results from ping servers to tell subscribers which items on their subscription lists have fresh material.

In less-geek speak: One word: traffic. WordPress automatically notifies popular ping services that you’ve updated your blog by sending a XML-RPC ping each time you create or update a post. In turn, Ping Services process the ping and updates their proprietary indices with your update. Now people browsing sites like Technorati or Sphere can find your most recent posts! (Wordpress Codex)

Pinging is Super Fantastic but if your using Wordpress beware there are some major flaws in the way that Wordpress (by default) handles pinging that can get your blog banned from pinging services without you even knowing it…and causing you to loose traffic.

Write a post, PING, Great! Edit the post, PING, edit it again.. PING!! PING!! Not so great.

Multiple pinging can get you banned and if you’ve had your WordPress blog for some time then it’s highly possible that you’ve already been banned.

Do not fret my fearless warriors.. there is a WordPress plugin that fixes this problem ..

The Solution: MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer Plugin!

With this plugin you can list all the ping services you want to ping like usual but you can also see which posts have been pinged and when, limit the amount of times your site is pinged, when you edit an existing post, it won’t send an unnecessary ping to ping services and saves your blog from getting banned.

If you think you’ve already covered this issue..just so you know..these older plugins don’t work anymore:

  • Smart Update Pinger
  • Ping Fix
  • WP Cron Future Ping

If your not sure which Ping sites to list in your Wordpress read this post…

Carry on my good soldier!

Branding your Blog – tips and tricks

// October 27th, 2008 // 6 Comments » // Blogging, Design, Domain Names, Featured, For Geeks, Geeks, SEO, Social Network, Tutorial, Twitter, Useful, Wordpress, web tools, webmaster

What makes a reader want to subscribe to a blog? Simply put, they understand what your blog is about, your brand, and they are attracted to it. If a reader doesn’t understand what you are serving at your blog, then they won’t know if they will like your future content.
Branding your blog will make clear to your readers what your blog is about. You want them to be able to put into words what your blog is all about. Otherwise how could they ever want to share your site with others or subscribe if they can’t describe what your blog is about.

Watch and Learn

The Brand Gap

View SlideShare presentation or Upload your own. (tags: design brand)

Your “Brand Name” Tips

Make your brand name unique, short, easy to say, easy to spell and catchy. Also avoid words with hyphens in them. Some might suggest that you should use keywords in your domain name that relate to your topic but this is not always necessary. What’s most important is that the domain name is BRAND-ABLE and memorable. Take web giant “Google.com” as an example, that said using keywords in your domain name can help with search engine optimization but in the end you want to be able to trademark your brand name and if your domain name and website name is “wordpressthemes.com” well, good luck with that one.
Your domain name and the name of your blog should always be one in the same. It only makes sense to people and people like things to make sense. People tend to try .com unless told otherwise, so registering a .com domain name is always the best way to go.

If you don’t find a niche market for the product or service you offer, you will most probably fail. Find your market niche and then make it clear to your visitors what your about, otherwise your visitors will be trying to figure it out for themselves. Take a look at your site from a visitors stand point.
At first glance, is it clear what the website is about?
Realize many others may be competing to sell the same product. Focus on something unique you may have to offer, that stands out from your competitors.
Is your niche something you have a passion for? If you don’t have a passion for what your writing about then it makes it difficult to keep your visitors interested. If your not really interested yourself how do you expect other people to be?
Having a clearly-defined purpose accomplishes several branding goals: it gives your site a focused topic, narrows what keywords you should target for SEO purposes, provides you with things to post about and (hopefully) sets you apart from other blogs in your genre. You can address your blog’s purpose directly on your About page, but don’t forget to refer to it regularly as you post. See also ProBlogger’s post about creating a blog mission statement.

Watch the presentation below for some great tips and guidelines on how to create your brand..

Unique Design

Needless to say, a unique design works wonders in creating a brand. If you are proficient in programming, dedicate your time in preparing a custom theme for your blog. If you do not have the necessary skills, do not hesitate to get your work done by a professional, an original design can do wonders for your branding. Are 5000 other blogs running on the same default theme as yours? Do something to distinguish yourself—customize your colors, pick new fonts, add a custom blog header. You do want your blog to stand out from the crowd.

You can find some really beautiful and unique themes for wordpress by professional designers.
I personally recommend the following Premium Wordpress themes designers:

ThemeForest – Beautiful designs at the right price.
Revolution – Probably the most famous Wordpress theme set
PremiumThemes – High Quality WordPress Themes at Affordable Price
Omni Themes – Themes come in several colors, magazine styled home page and social networking section.

The Keyword is..Consistency!

Google is a perfect example of how to use consistancy. When you think of Google what comes to mind? Yep, their colorful Google logo. They’ve successfully used their brand across all the different tools and sites that they represent.

Try to use the same look and feel throughout your blog. Wherever possible, use the same colors and graphics— you can even add your own logo to your feedburner feed. Read Master Your Feed: Feedburner Tips and Tricks for instructions on how to do that.

Using Twitter to spread the word..you have arrived!

Twitter has the power to build your brand and make you an authority in your niche. Start with redirecting your feed to twitter with the help of TwitterFeed. It will automatically tweet your posts giving exposure to your blog. Make strong network with fellow bloggers, and encourage constructive discussions with them. Do not forget to provide useful links and resources to your followers via regular tweets. It keep them looking for your tweets for new relevant information.

Quarkbase – Check how your site is doing online and across the social network..

Quarkbase is a free tool to find complete information about a website. It looks like most web traffic tracking sites, but includes results from technorati, twitter, del.icio.us, digg and others. A most useful site…

Using RSS Feeds to add dynamic content to your website..video, images and text!

// October 22nd, 2008 // No Comments » // Blogging, Cool Links, Cool Websites, For Geeks, Geeks, I recommend, RSS Feeds, SEO, The Best of.., Tutorial, Useful, Videos, google, web tools, webmaster

If you can have a program aggregate RSS feeds, then it makes sense that you can aggregate the aggregators and that’s what Popurl does…

Learn how to add video, image and text feeds to your website..

So, there is a lot of content in this post.. maybe too much.. but I found so many great RSS feed resources that I just felt a strong need to share them..all.

Using RSS Feeds to Add Dynamic Content to your Website:

I’ve recently been playing around with a blog idea using the onenews template which is basically a rip off of popurls.com website. Unfortunantly the template doesn’t come with the plugins for adding video and images that the premium theme offers so I had to try and figure that all out on my own. It took me a minute to figure it all out so I wanted to put together a list of some of the tools I found that worked when it came to adding video and image feeds to your site.

Using videos and image feeds can be a lot of fun and lets face it, it’s an awesome way to add more content to your website. A mashup!

We’ve all seen the Flickr RSS feeds on blogs and those are great but if you want to get a little more nifty you need to check out these sites…

  • This is the answer..A little bit more complicated for the first time user but there are videos on youtube and on their site that can help you learn how to create pipes. Pipes are feeds from other sites or your site which you can filter RSS feeds using tags and other filters. Very cool. I’d say this is the best resource I found if your looking to create a mashup feed of images or videos on your website or blog.
  • – Create RSS feeds using video, images, audio or text using an easy to follow editor.
  • – Free dynamic content for your site. RSS/RDF Converter Fill in the feeds details and it will generate the feed to JavaScript for you. Nice! This works for images and video feeds as well.
  • RSS Xpress-Lite – RSSxpress Lite is a simple way of placing an RSS channel onto your own websites using a single line of JavaScript. You don’t even need to understand JavaScript, just cut an paste and hopefully it’ll work! This service enables you specify the RSS channel you want to add to your site and will then create the JavaScript required for you to cut and paste to your own pages – Just Try it!
Just to give you an idea..I used this site to create the collegehumor feed at the bottom of my omgWTFDaily.com website. I’m still playing around with that site it is FAR from finished.
  • FeedSweep – Create custom text feeds
  • Create a Feed at Feed Widget.com
  • Create a Video Feed at mefeedia.com

Need help? Can’t find those pesky video and podcast feeds?
