Meta Tags in Plain English

// March 5th, 2010 // No Comments » // Code, For Geeks, SEO, Useful, Wordpress, web tools, webdesign, webmaster

Meta-tags are used by search engines to correctly index and rank web sites. The most important meta tags are the keywords meta tags and the description meta tags and both are essential for any well-built site.

When you create a website and you submit it to the search engines, the search engines “spiders” are sent out to “crawl” the site and attempt to correctly index it based on the information it provides. They do this based on several things including the keywords in the content and in the meta tags. Each search engine indexes web sites according to their own algorithms. Some place emphasis on the description tag, such as AltaVista. Other search engines, like Exactseek, are meta tag purists, as stated in their user policy: “Your site will not be added if it does not have Title and Meta description tags.

Recently, some search engines have downplayed the importance of meta tags due to spam. Some SEO “specialists” were keyword stuffing their tags with irrelevant information, just to get traffic. To penalize this abuse, some search engines don’t assign too much weight to the keywords in meta tags, but they still check to make sure they are relevant.

Fact: All major search engines including Google, Yahoo!, Scrub The Web, MSN Bing and others utilize Meta Tags!

If you’re visiting or worse paying search engine optimization sites that claim Meta Tags including the Meta Description are not used by the major search engines and the meta tag isn’t important anymore.. Run away, don’t walk but you don’t have to take my word for it, just visit Google™ or Yahoo!® and see what they have to say about Meta Tag optimization.

Bottom line.. either way, if you don’t have meta tags, or your meta tags are stuffed with irrelevant keywords, you won’t rank well in the search engines.

Avoid using capitalization in your code, as well as any repetition within the keyword tag.  The meta tag description is displayed by most search engines along with the page title. It is important to keep the meta description short, concise and relevant to your site content. I suggest under 30-40 words. (up to a maximum of 250 characters).

Recommendations for the Meta Keywords tag: Make sure to only use keywords that are relevant to your site. Search engines are known to penalize or blacklist your site for abuse.

MOST IMPORTANT: Put the same keywords that you put your meta tag in your website content! If the keywords aren’t already included within the body text in sufficient density, and in a coherent and relevant context then it won’t matter what keyword tags you use or where you put them. You won’t rank well and you may be penalized for keyword stuffing.

Without a doubt, content is still king and still the biggest contributor to search engine page ranking, so if you want to raise your rankings, make sure you have quality content.

I recommed using a Meta Tag generator like Scrub the Web or Addme.com to create the Meta Tag. If you need help learning how to insert the Meta tag into your Wordpress  hosted website click here.

For more information read How To Dial In Your Keywords and Making Friends With The Spider.

In the default installation, WordPress does not include meta tags such as description and keywords. So you must insert this yourself.

Using Meta Tag Plugins allow you to customize meta tags, and to choose the ones you want to add, or not, on a per-post basis. This allows your meta information to better describe each page.

OK..Now that I’m done researching this post.. I need to go re-do my meta tags. Well at least I have a meta tag!! The scary thing is I give financial advisors SEO and meta tag advice all day while I completly neglect my own meta tags. Bad, bad Webmaster!

New Social Networking Icon Sets Galore!

// January 5th, 2010 // No Comments » // Blogging, Cool Links, Cool Websites, Design, Design Resources, Desktop Icons, Facebook, Featured, For Geeks, Freeware, Geeks, Graphic Design, Graphics, Hosting, I recommend, Icons, Rss Feed Icons, Social Network, Social Network Icons, Twitter, Useful, free, icon sets, web tools, webdesign, webmaster

Two cool new sites offering new social networking icon sets. It’s always nice to see new sets and I’m always looking so if you know of one I have not posted please let me know or if you’ve designed one and you’d like to be featured – Let me know!

http://icons.mysitemyway.com/

WebTreats

Both sites were designed using.. My Site My Way which is something new to me..what I found strange instead of them having their own domain names they use a subdomain – for example: icons.mysitemyway.com must be great for mysitemyway’s search engine results! However..If I were the webmaster for one of these web sites above, I would nix using the mysitemyway’s subdomain and definitely register my own domain name. Because I’d want my ranking, seo etc.. to go towards my web site not my web hosts. Plus I never recommend sub domains. Use a .com and point to your main index so that people can type your domain name directly into their browsers and show up where they need to go without having to remember a long sub domain address.

my site my way

Random and possibly use-ful or use-less information…

Understanding Sub-Domains and Sub Directory and how it effects SEO

“blog.domain.com” is a subdomain while “domain.com/blog” is a subdirectory or a folder within a domain.

A sub domain creates more separation than just a sub directory or a folder, since a subdomain is basically creating a stand alone site that could easily be it’s own domain. However, you may want to piggyback on the main domain name. For example, google.com is the main site. Gmail actually lives at mail.google.com.

WPWebHost.com Review – Best Hosting for Wordpress!

// October 5th, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Blogging, Cool Links, Cool Websites, Featured, For Geeks, Hosting, I recommend, News, Useful, Wordpress, webmaster, wordpress tutorials

Good web hosting is one of the most important things that is overlooked by newbie bloggers. I know this because I made this mistake myself. Well, actually, by a stroke of luck, I turned out alright. Before I bought a yearly plan from my current web host, I hadn’t done any research into other providers at all. Six months later I now see that I could have saved money here and there for the same amount of services from other hosting companies, one of them being WPWebhost.com.

Now moving my website from one host to another isn’t easy. I just wish I would of thought of these things when I started my website. That’s why I’m here to point you in the right direction.

Does your web hosting company have a “face”? Do you know who the owners are? How good is your customer service at your current provider? WPWebhost.com is unique in that it’s unlike all the normal hosts out there. Instead of just being a static website with the only purpose being to sell you their services, WPWebhost.com a reliable hosting provider and a regularly-updated blog slapped into one.

WPWebHost

Specifications and Pricing

WPWebHost.com is one of the best web hosting providers that I’ve ever seen in terms of price. One of their simplest plans are as follows:

  • 50GB of web space
  • 500GB of monthly bandwidth
  • Host up to 50 domain names
  • WordPress-compatible server
  • WordPress-savvy support team
  • Only $5 a month ($60 a year!)

And here’s a list of their monthly, yearly, and bi-yearly plans:

  • Monthly Fee: $8/month
  • Annual Fee: $6.67/month ($80/year)
  • Bi-annual Fee: $5/month ($120/2 years) Best Value

One of the greatest things about WPWebhost.com is that they offer you a 100-day money-back guarantee! If you decide you don’t like their service for whatever reason after 3 months, you can get your money back and move on no strings attached! And in case you didn’t know, WPWebHost.com is built specifically to host Wordpress blogs and run them at their highest potential in terms of speed. Also, another unique feature that I’ve seen only with these guys is that when you sign up for any plan under them, you automatically receive a free copy of their premium Wordpress theme “Western”.

A gallery will display a set of thumbnail images attached to that post or page. If you upload images using the Add an Image icon, they will get attached automatically. If you upload images using the media library, you will need to attach it to a post or page before it will appear in a gallery.

Here is a video tutorial on how to add an image gallery to your blog post:

16 New FREE Magazine Style Wordpress Themes

// August 7th, 2009 // 9 Comments » // Blogging, Design, Design Resources, For Geeks, Magazine Theme, Wordpress Themes, Wp Themes, webdesign, webmaster

I did a search tonight for some new Magazine styles Wordpress Themes and I found some really nice ones especially the wpjunction.com themes. Good Stuff! Problem with those is I really had to search to find the download files since the main website is currently under construction and isn’t listing the download files on the website just links to the demo sites. It’s possible he plans on removing them so I’d download them now. Better safe then sorry. I’ve seen this happen before where a designer will offer their themes for free and then change their mind and start selling them as premium themes. Anyway, I’ve posted 14 of them in this post. Enjoy and comment! Digg the post!

Don’t Miss Out on Local SEO Opportunities

Don’t Miss Out on Local SEO Opportunities

Local search engine optimization is a great way to charge up your search rankings. It’s a faster method for making sure you’re on the right track, and if optimized properly you can really take advantage of some targeted traffic that will only help your business in the future.

It doesn’t matter if you’re developing websites for a mom and pop local plumber or a multi-million dollar agency that will have thousands of dynamic pages, the same 13 steps to on-site SEO will need to be applied to each.

How to Write Blog Posts to Increase Search Engine Traffic – Here’s an easy formula to follow:

  • In your blog, write a post with keyword A in your title something catchy, more info on that over here at seomoz or copyblogger
  • Write in-depth and informative content related to keyword A
  • Target keyword A in a link from your post to page2.html
  • When appropriate, link out to other authorities that can offer more information about your keyword topic (Use this tip with caution. While you are trying to give the user more info and get the attention of the other site – thus possibly getting a link back to your site – you should try to strike a balance so that the effectiveness of your post is maximized without excessive links out from your site)
  • Remember to vary the way you link keyword A to page2.html (did you target long-tail keywords? Those are very easy to alter)
  • Repeat this process on each post for all pertinent keywords throughout your site

The nice thing about this formula is that you actually tackle quite a few of the common marketing questions that challenge many business owners.
