Fun with Twitter: Twittereader.com & Twitterbuttons.com

TwitteReader.com

Check out TwitteReader, a new and free service which turns Twitter into something resembling Google Reader.

Once you’ve plugged in your username and password, it presents the latest tweets as individual feed items, which you can cruise through either by reading the short snippets (a la Google Reader) or expanding them out to full posts with a click.

Just like Google Reader and Gmail, you can move up and down the list with the same J and K keyboard shortcuts. You can also star items, which adds them to your Twitter favorites list. The application keeps track of what you’ve read and what you haven’t, which, depending on how many people you’re following, could be useful. If a system like Google Reader’s trends were to be applied to this you could see which people’s updates you’re not reading and cut them out of your followers list.

Of course the obvious must be stated here–you can simply take the RSS feed of your friends provided by Twitter and plug it into Google Reader to accomplish something quite similar. TwitteReader’s killer feature, however, is that it lets you post and reply to messages from each post, just like you would in Twitter.

How to Customize your Feedburner Headline Animator

// February 16th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Admin Tools, Blogging, Design, For Geeks, Geeks, I recommend, RSS Feeds, Tutorial, Useful, Wordpress, Wordpress Themes, free, web tools, webmaster, wordpress tutorials

A good way to promote your site is by using Feedburner for your RSS Feeds. One of their cooler features is their Headline Animator widget and if your anything like me and you love to design graphics then this can be a fun little project for you to add to your site.
For those of you who are not familiar with Feedburner..First you will have to register at Feedburner and burn your blog.
Once you’ve done that,  log into your account,  select your feed,  click on the “Publicize” tab and look for the Headline Animator service which is listed in the left-hand side bar.
Under “Theme” select “provide your own background” from the drop down list. Required (GIF only).

Create your graphic in Photoshop. I created a .gif that was 243px × 110px pixels and a 468×60px .gif.  (view them below)

Your Headline Animator will be the same size (height and width) as the background image. Play around with different shapes and sizes. Once you’ve uploaded the new graphic, feedburner allows you to drag and drop the animated text where it needs to be on the graphic and the length of the animated text box. You can also choose the text color of your font and the size. You don’t have a lot of control but you can play with it to make it look pretty cool if your creative. If you decide to make one..make sure to post your link here so we can all check out your creation.

If you have any questions or if you get stuck feel free to leave your questions here or check out Feedburner’s FAQ.

// November 5th, 2008 // No Comments » // Blogging, Cool Links, Design, Design Resources, Graphic Design, Graphics, Icons, Photoshop, RSS Feeds, Rss Feed Icons, Social Network, Social Network Icons, Wordpress, Wordpress Plugins, webdesign, webmaster

If you want to add social bookmarking icons or links to the bottom of your posts here are a few different ways you can do it with out a plugin. You can of course use one of the many Wordpress plugins like Sharethis or Social Bookmarking RELOADED.

However, if you want to add something a little more unique to your posts to get people’s attention you can use the examples from Catwhocode.com and Hongkiat.com by creating an image map banner at the bottom of your posts using CSS and PHP. You can find out how by reading the tutorial by wphacks.com or one of the other tutorials listed below..whichever one works for you. I tested out the last one and it worked great for me and was easy as pie.

It’s a lot easier then you might think…examples below..

There’s a couple other hacks I found based on the same concept.

Or you can use this one that I made for a darker background…it’s not a black background it’s a dark blue grey but it turned out pretty cute I think.

If you need help finding icons to use in your image map no fear there are plenty of them on this site so just check out one of my icon posts to find the perfect social networking icon for your blog. You can use photo feeds to add dynamic content to your website , or you can just add them to your Google Screensaver.

If you installed Google’s photo screensaver check out Framechannel. This service lets you create a feed from more than 200 channels of photos that include NASA’s photo of the day, travel pictures, images from National Geographic, news and weather. You have to create an account, select your favorite content and copy the URL of your feed. Then add the feed to your Google’s screensaver. The cool thing is that the URL of the feed remains the same even if you add or remove a channel.

For those who don’t want to install Google Screensaver, they also have a list of alternative programs & plug-ins for Windows and Mac.

Using RSS Feeds to add dynamic content to your website..video, images and text!

// October 22nd, 2008 // No Comments » // Blogging, Cool Links, Cool Websites, For Geeks, Geeks, I recommend, RSS Feeds, SEO, The Best of.., Tutorial, Useful, Videos, google, web tools, webmaster

If you can have a program aggregate RSS feeds, then it makes sense that you can aggregate the aggregators and that’s what Popurl does…

Learn how to add video, image and text feeds to your website..

So, there is a lot of content in this post.. maybe too much.. but I found so many great RSS feed resources that I just felt a strong need to share them..all.

Using RSS Feeds to Add Dynamic Content to your Website:

I’ve recently been playing around with a blog idea using the onenews template which is basically a rip off of popurls.com website. Unfortunantly the template doesn’t come with the plugins for adding video and images that the premium theme offers so I had to try and figure that all out on my own. It took me a minute to figure it all out so I wanted to put together a list of some of the tools I found that worked when it came to adding video and image feeds to your site.

Using videos and image feeds can be a lot of fun and lets face it, it’s an awesome way to add more content to your website. A mashup!

We’ve all seen the Flickr RSS feeds on blogs and those are great but if you want to get a little more nifty you need to check out these sites…

  • This is the answer..A little bit more complicated for the first time user but there are videos on youtube and on their site that can help you learn how to create pipes. Pipes are feeds from other sites or your site which you can filter RSS feeds using tags and other filters. Very cool. I’d say this is the best resource I found if your looking to create a mashup feed of images or videos on your website or blog.
  • – Create RSS feeds using video, images, audio or text using an easy to follow editor.
  • – Free dynamic content for your site. RSS/RDF Converter Fill in the feeds details and it will generate the feed to JavaScript for you. Nice! This works for images and video feeds as well.
  • RSS Xpress-Lite – RSSxpress Lite is a simple way of placing an RSS channel onto your own websites using a single line of JavaScript. You don’t even need to understand JavaScript, just cut an paste and hopefully it’ll work! This service enables you specify the RSS channel you want to add to your site and will then create the JavaScript required for you to cut and paste to your own pages – Just Try it!
Just to give you an idea..I used this site to create the collegehumor feed at the bottom of my omgWTFDaily.com website. I’m still playing around with that site it is FAR from finished.
  • FeedSweep – Create custom text feeds
  • Create a Feed at Feed Widget.com
  • Create a Video Feed at mefeedia.com

Need help? Can’t find those pesky video and podcast feeds?
