18 of the Hottest Music Sites Online

// Ibdreamy

Here is a list of 18 of the hottest music sites and social networking music sites online right now. I hope you find it useful. It took me forever to put together..but I found some really cool website’s in the process. Enjoy!

Last.fm
– is another Web 2.0 veteran and is more socially-slanted than the others. Tagging is a big part of the last.fm experience and you can tag any song that comes along in addition to being able to listen to “user tag radio” which is based on tracks that users have tagged with a specific genera. last.fm has a separate desktop application that “scrobbles” the songs you listen to and generates a music profile that you can share with friends.

The Hype Machine – follows music blog discussion. Every day, hundreds of people around the world write about music they love. Then it all ends up here. Hype Radio is Internet radio that is powered by blogs. All the tracks that end up in the stream are songs recently mentioned by bloggers listed on the Hype Machine. It’s radio that’s truly powered by the Internet.

Pandora – is the granddaddy of the bunch and it’s one of the Web 2.0 applications that I can’t live without. It is built using OpenLaszlo and provides the cleanest experience out of all the applications on the list. Pandora uses the Music Genome Project to generate a stream of songs that you’ll like based on how you rate previous tracks. You create stations around artists, songs or albums and you can provide feedback (thumbs up or thumbs down) on the songs Pandora chooses.

MOG – is a social networking site where users who listen to their music primarily on their computers or iPods can set up personal pages with their musical interests and listening history. There are tools for connecting with other similar users. MOG is similar to Last.fm, but it first uploads a listing of a user’s digital music collection to their MOG page, then it keeps track of what music is played on the user’s computer.

Streampad – is a full-featured music application that runs inside a web browser. It is being developed by Dan Kantor. You can: Listen to your own music from anywhere in the world. Stream concerts from the Internet Archive. Tune in to great music from around the web. Create your own playlists and share them on your own site. See what your friends are listening to.

Projectplaylist.com is an information location tool devoted entirely to the world of music. Their purpose is to help you find and enjoy music legally throughout the web and they also add a social community twist. They try to make it easy for you to create playlists, share your playlists with friends, and browse playlists of others to connect to cool music.

SpiralFrog – is an advertising-supported online music service offering free and legal music and video downloads and is the largest site of its kind in North America.

Soundpedia – internet radio and music community website, founded in 2006 and has over 1 million active users. Users can create custom radio stations and playlists from any of the audio tracks in Soundpedia’s music library, and are able to listen to individual tracks on demand, but can not download tracks unless the rights holder has previously authorized it. Registration is required to acquire a profile but is not necessary to view any part of the site or to listen to radio stations.

Social.Zune – is a social networking website that displays a user’s most-played artists, favorite and recently played songs, and a list of the users friends, in addition to any comments about them. It has been compared to iLike and Last.fm in that it tracks and displays, or "scrobbles," songs that the user has played.

iLike is an iTunes plug-in that makes your music library more social. It tracks what you’re listening too and recommends songs and people with similar tastes. It hooks in nicely with the iTunes interface and recommends music as you’re playing songs. I listen to some pretty obscure stuff and the recommendations were good. They also have a widget for MySpace that is formatted to sit nicely in the “Music” section of the profile.

Allmusic – A metadata database about music. The network of writers includes over 900 music critics who review albums and songs and write artist biographies. Allmusic claims to have the world’s largest digital archive of music, including approximately six million songs fully digitized, as well as the world’s largest cover art library, with over half a million cover image scans.

Lala.com you can upload your music to the internet. Upload your iTunes and My Music folder to the Web. Say "iPod": Designed to be iPod friendly, easily fill up your iPod from the Web (and any PC) with your favorite music. The "S" word – share. Don’t spend hours on P2P sites and worry about viruses. On Lala.com you can safely share music and playlists.

PureVolume is similar to Myspace music pages but is different in the fact that the entire website is set up for artist to promote their bands. It music before anything else and it a great place to find new acts with minimal distractions. It charts the most popular artists and songs so users can know what’s been popular that day and maybe hear about the next big act. PureVolume also is not as cluttered with ads like most of the other website’s on this list so it makes it much more aesthetically pleasing. PureVolume is an extremely easy website to navigate and use.

Finetune – is a relatively new application written in Flash. It’s my favorite out of the bunch. What makes Finetune stand out is that in addition to the standard “artist radio”, it allows users to build playlists of specific songs. The minimum playlist is 45 songs and you can have up to three songs per artist. With custom playlists, you can make sure you’re only listening to songs you want. Finetune also gets points because in addition to the web version, it runs on the Wii and there is an Apollo-based desktop client.

IJigg – is a digg-esque music discovery service that I had a lot of fun playing with. Users vote on individual songs and the most popular rise to the top of the front page. You can’t do any “related artists” with iJigg, but you can browse by genre so that you can target your music discovery. The iJigg player can also be embedded on other sites so you can share it with friends. As this service gets more popular, I think it will be a great way for bands to get discovered.

Buzznet.com is a photo, journal, and video-sharing social media network. Like other social networking sites, Buzznet is a place for members to share content based on their personal interests. Unlike classic social networks, which focus primarily on messaging and profile pages, Buzznet members participate in communities that are created around ideas, events and interests; most predominantly, music, celebrities and the media.

Midomi allows you to sing, hum, or type song lyrics and identifies the song for you. You can also search by artist, or hold your iPhone up to the radio. It even allows you to hear a preview of the resulting songs, in order to ensure that it has chosen the correct one. Midomi is a great free app available for the iPhone, from the ITunes app store.

4shared – In my opinion this is the best free online storage site. No problems uploading and no waiting times downloading files either.

Don’t forget give a little comment love..
